♦ The Elephant-Headed God, Gajanana's tale
A long time ago, as Goddess Parvati was getting ready for her bath, she breathed life into a youngster she had created out of turmeric paste. Her son was intelligent, fun-loving, and powerful.
She gave him the name Vinayaka and instructed him to watch the door while she took a bath. Right then, Lord Shiva, Parvati's spouse, showed up and attempted to come inside. However, the little kid boldly stood in his way, unaware of who Shiva was.
Shiva and his supporters made an effort to move forward while feeling enraged and perplexed, but the lad refused to give way. Shiva, in a fit of rage, cut off the boy's head during the ensuing struggle.
Parvati was devastated when she came outside and saw what had transpired. Her grief caused the skies to shake.
In order to soothe her, Shiva pledged to resurrect the child. He dispatched his ganas to locate the head of the first living creature they saw, which was facing north.
They came back with the head of a magnificent elephant. Shiva put it on the youngster's body and restored his life. The deities rejoiced. Shiva gave him his blessing:
"You will be known as Gajanana, the one with the elephant face. In every prayer and worship, you will be the first to be revered."
From that day forward, Gajanana—Lord Ganesha—represented knowledge, power, and fresh starts.
