The Sacred Story of Goddess Varahi in the Battle of the Divine Mothers

According to the Devi Mahatmya and later Shakta traditions, Goddess Varahi is revered among the powerful Matrikas, the divine mother forms who assist the Goddess in her battle against destructive forces.

A great battle unfolded when the demon brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha challenged the divine forces and sought to establish their power over the celestial realms. The Goddess, representing the supreme Shakti, stood against their armies. As the conflict intensified, the great divine powers manifested their corresponding Mother forms. Brahmani appeared with the power of Brahma, Maheshvari with the power of Shiva, Kaumari with the power of Skanda, Vaishnavi with the power of Vishnu, and other powerful forms joined the divine army.

Among them appeared Goddess Varahi, bearing the boar-like face associated with Lord Varaha. She arrived as a formidable warrior, carrying divine weapons and displaying immense strength. The demon armies advanced in overwhelming numbers, but the Matrikas met them fearlessly. Varahi entered the battlefield as one of the fierce Mothers, striking at the enemies and helping weaken the forces opposing the Goddess. Then came the terrifying demon Raktabija.

Raktabija possessed an extraordinary boon: whenever a drop of his blood touched the ground, another demon equal to him would arise from it. Each wound therefore seemed to make the demon army larger rather than smaller. The divine Mothers attacked him with their weapons, but his blood continued to fall and multiply his forms. The battlefield became increasingly difficult to control.

Seeing this, the Goddess commanded Kali and Chamunda to prevent his blood from touching the earth. As the other Mothers continued their assault, every drop was consumed before it could create another demon. Varahi and the other divine Mothers continued fighting alongside the Goddess until the demonic forces were finally overcome.

The story of Varahi's participation in this great battle is remembered in Shakta traditions as an expression of divine power confronting forces that threaten cosmic order. Rather than representing strength alone, her warrior form is associated with the focused and disciplined use of divine power. This varahi idol beautifully reflects that formidable warrior aspect through its multiple arms, traditional weapons, elaborate crown, and commanding seated posture.

The story also makes this Varahi murti a meaningful devotional representation for those who appreciate the protective and warrior traditions surrounding the Divine Mother. Her distinctive boar-faced form connects her with the Varaha aspect of Vishnu, while her place among the Matrikas gives her an important position within Shakta traditions. This combination makes the varahi statue especially distinctive among traditional goddess sculptures.
