In Shaiva tradition, Goddess Parvati gifted Lord Muruga (Kartikeya) the Vel, embodying her shakti, to defeat the demon Surapadman.

As recounted in the Skanda Purana, Murugan defeated Surapadman’s entire army with the Vel. To escape, Surapadman transformed into a giant mango tree, but Murugan’s Vel split the tree in half. One half turned into a peacock ("Mayil") and the other into a rooster ("Seval"), symbols that became part of Lord Muruga's iconography.

In Kartikeya temples, the Vel is venerated as a symbol of divinity, and the gifting of the Vel by Parvati is celebrated annually during Thaipusam.
