Renuka, a mother of five sons, lost her power to collect water in unbaked pots due to seeing Gandharva spirits at the river. She returned home empty-handed and was cursed by her husband, Jamadagni. After being cursed by her husband, Renuka went to the forest. After a few days, she visited her husband. Jamadagni ordered his sons to punish Renuka. Four of them refused, so Jamadagni turned them into ashes. Parashurama, the fifth son, punished his mother. After a boon, Jamadagni offered a boon, and Parashurama asked for Renuka and his brothers to be resurrected. Renuka's spirit multiplied and spread to different regions, restoring her and inspiring her sons to become her followers and worship her.
