What Goes into a Vishu Kanni Setup

There are typically rice, mangoes, bananas, vegetables, coconuts, and betel leaves in a Vishu Kanni setup. In addition to that, a traditional mirror is placed in the middle so that when a person looks at a Vishu Kanni setup, they can see themselves in it. That is a nice idea.

Gold items like coins or jewelry are added to symbolize wealth and success. A small idol or picture of Lord Krishna is also added, along with a holy book like the Bhagavad Gita. “Konna,” or bright yellow flowers, are also very important. These add a festive look and are considered lucky for this day.

All this is placed in a wide vessel, usually made of brass and called an “Uruli.” A traditional oil lamp is lit near this vessel. The entire setting is simple, cozy, and extremely meaningful.

How the Ritual is Done

Vishu Kanni is performed on the morning of Vishu. On this day, people wake up early, even before sunrise. In some cases, elders take younger members of the family to the Kanni with their eyes closed. As soon as they open their eyes, they see the Vishu Kanni. This is a simple yet meaningful ritual.

The family then prays and takes the blessings. The next part of this ritual is extremely meaningful and fun too. This is called “Vishu Kaineettam,” in which elders give money to children and younger members of the family. This is not about the amount of money; it’s about the joy and blessings.

Even in the US, this ritual is followed as closely as possible. The setting may be simple, according to what is available. This is perfectly fine.
