Vijayadashami – The Celebration of Victory of Good over Evil

Vijayadashami or Dussehra is a prominent Hindu festival observed throughout India and by Hindu people all over the world. "Vijaya" in the name means victory, and "Dashami" indicates the tenth day of the lunar month. Vijayadashami is the celebration of the victory of dharma (righteousness) over adharma (evil) and is full of cultural, spiritual, and historical meaning.

The Story Behind Vijayadashami

Vijayadashami is linked to two prominent tales of Hindu scriptures. The first is from the Ramayana, when Lord Rama vanquishes the demon king Ravana after a prolonged struggle to liberate Sita. This triumph reflects the strength of truth, devotion, and virtue. In most regions of India, large effigies of Ravana, Meghnath, and Kumbhakarna are set on fire on this day, reminding us that arrogance and evil never prevail in the end.

The second tale is taken from the Devi Mahatmya of the Markandeya Purana, when Goddess Durga kills the buffalo demon Mahishasura after nine nights of battle. Therefore, Vijayadashami also celebrates the end of the nine nights of Navaratri, the nine nights of worship of the Divine Mother in her different forms.

Regional Celebrations

Vijayadashami is celebrated differently in various regions of India. In North India Ramlila performances, which are dramatic re-enactments of the life of Lord Rama, reach their climax on this day. In West Bengal, the festival brings grand culmination of Durga Puja when idols of Goddess Durga are taken to rivers or the sea accompanied by prayers and processions. In South India, Vijayadashami is a propitious day to start new undertakings, education, or cultural activities such as music and dance. Most families put their books, tools, and instruments in front of Goddess Saraswati and then continue their studies with her blessings.

Spiritual Meaning

Apart from the rituals, Vijayadashami encourages us to introspect about our personal lives. Similar to Rama defeating Ravana and Durga killing Mahishasura, we also are spurred on to overcome inner vice like anger, greed, pride, and jealousy. The festival reminds us that even when we have strong obstacles, patience, devotion, and truth will triumph in the end.

Vijayadashami in the Modern World

In the busy lives of today, festivals such as Vijayadashami serve to remind us of our cultural heritage and values. In many families settled outside the country, particularly in the United States, Dussehra celebrations keep alive the traditions for the newer generation. It serves to bond with the community and share tales of valor and righteousness.

Conclusion

Vijayadashami is not only the conclusion of Navaratri. It is a symbol that good shall overcome evil and truth shall triumph. Whether with the tale of Rama or the triumph of Goddess Durga, this festival inspires millions of people around the globe.

As we celebrate Vijayadashami, let us take its message with us into our daily lives, to decide on truth to adhere to dharma & to vanquish darkness through light.
