The festival is celebrated mainly in Tamil Nadu in India but is celebrated by Tamil people in different parts of the world, such as the United States, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Canada.

For Tamil people living in the United States, Tamil New Year is great opportunity to maintain their connection not only with their roots but also aheritage. Although people may be miles away from their homes, they celebrate this day with great enthusiasm and decorate their homes and prepare traditional dishes and spend time with their families and friends.

It is not just a traditional celebration but also carries significant religious importance and reminds people to welcome the new year with hope and faith.

Spiritual Meaning of Tamil New Year

Tamil New Year is said to have significant religious importance and is associated with the creation of the universe by Lord Brahma. It is said that Lord Brahma began creating the universe on this day in line with Hindu religious beliefs.

It is said that the Tamil calendar is associated with the solar cycle and that Tamil New Year begins with the sun’s entry into the zodiac sign Aries, which is known as Mesha Sankranti. This marks the beginning of a new year in the Tamil solar calendar.

For many, this day also serves as an occasion to think about life. People seek blessings for peace, health, and prosperity for the upcoming year. It is believed that by beginning the day with positive thoughts and prayers, one can attain positive energy for the rest of the year.

These beliefs are very significant even for Tamil families who are living abroad. Celebrating this festival ensures that the younger generation, who are growing up abroad, are also familiar with the traditions of India.

Traditional Rituals and Customs

Tamil New Year starts very early in the morning. People wake up before sunrise, take a bath and wear new clothes. People also clean as well as decorate their homes with kolam which are attractive designs made with rice flour at the entrance of the house.

Another very unique tradition of Tamil New Year is preparing Puthandu Kanni, which has to be arranged the night before the festival. It consists of fruits, flowers, betel leaves, gold or silver ornaments and mirrors. When the members of the house wake up, they look at this arrangement first. It is believed that by seeing this arrangement at the beginning of the day, they can attain positive energy for the rest of the year.

Many Tamil families also visit temples on this day to seek blessings. In Tamil Nadu, many temples like Meenakshi Amman Temple are filled with thousands of devotees on this festival.

Though Tamil families living in the US might not be able to find many temples, they can surely visit Hindu temples and seek blessings by praying at home by lighting a lamp and offering fruits and flowers to the deity.

Mangai Pachadi and the Six Tastes of Life

Food is an extremely significant component in the celebrations related to Tamil New Year. One such food item that is made as a part of the celebrations related to Tamil New Year is known as ‘Mangai Pachadi.’ The ingredients used to prepare this food item include raw mango, jaggery, neem flowers, tamarind, chilli or pepper, and salt.

Mangai Pachadi is a special food item as it contains all six tastes, called ‘Arusuvai’ in Tamil. The presence of these six tastes is significant as they represent all the emotions that are felt by humans in their lifetime.

  1. Sweet (Jaggery): Happiness.

  2. Sour (Raw Mango): Unpleasant but necessary experiences.

  3. Bitter (Neem Flowers): Sadness or obstacles.

  4. Pungent/Spicy (Chilli/Pepper): Anger or excitement.

  5. Salty (Salt): Fear or the "salt of life."

  6. Astringent (Tamarind/Mango skin): Boredom or surprise.

Consuming this food item reminds people about the fact that their life consists of many moments, not just happy ones. The presence of all these moments has to be accepted by an individual as a whole, and this is the message conveyed by this food item.
